WBS Institute for Asian Educators Development
Rooted in Service – Renewing Educators – Reaching the Margins

Message from the President
“This year, we chose the long road, the slow path, the quiet presence.  We chose to be with teachers not only when they celebrate – but when they grieve, when they question, when they almost give up.  Our mission was never to impress.  It has always been to accompany.”

Holding Steady in Uncertain Times
In 2024, Filipino teachers continued to face unprecedented challenges – economic instability, a nationwide learning crisis, worsening teacher shortages, and burnout in every classroom.  WBS responded with quiet, consistent presence: listening, holding space, and providing formation that sustained the spirit of the Filipino educator.  This was a year of accompanying without fanfare, planting without spectacle, and walking side by side with teachers in the trenches.

Grounded Work:  Formation in the Spirit of Quiet Commitment
WBS centered its mission around accompaniment.  Instead of large-scale events, the year focused on intimate gatherings, community-based formation, and one-on-one support.  Over 1,900 teachers joined small-group modules and healing circles across 23 provinces – mostly in remote, underserved areas.

Programs Focused on Inner Renewal and Teacher Identity
2024’s formation theme, “Paglilingkod, Pagkakatawag, Pagpapakatao” (Service, Vocation, Personhood), led educators through reflections on:

  • Teaching as vocation amid professional collapse
  • Reclaiming dignity in daily classroom work
  • Balancing survival with purpose in mission schools

These modules allowed participants to name their pain, recall their purpose, and renew their “yes” to teaching.

WBS Teacher Listening Project: Hearing the Cry of the Classroom
A key initiative this year was the WBS Listening Project, where our volunteer formation teams visited over 120 public and community-based schools to:

  • Listen to teachers’ lived experiences of exhaustion, poverty, and disillusionment
  • Document stories of resilience, advocacy, and hope
  • Understand deeper systemic issues affecting teacher morale

This project became a powerful mirror of truth, reminding us that healing begins when someone listens deeply and without judgment.

Bridging Resources to Underserved Teachers
With help from donors and faith-based partners, WBS delivered over 3,000 teacher care kits and spiritual reading materials to those working in:

  • Mountain schools in Cordillera and North Cotabato
  • Island classrooms in Quezon and Basilan
  • Inner-city learning centers for street youth and refugees

Each delivery included prayer cards, a booklet of inspirational teacher stories, basic teaching supplies, and a personal message from WBS volunteers – small tokens of hope in forgotten spaces.

Volunteer Mobilization: The Strength of Circles
A quiet but powerful network of WBS-trained volunteers carried out localized missions.  These included:

  • Sama-samang Paglilingkod”: inter-school formation days in Zambales, Iloilo, and South Cotabato
  • Support groups for new teachers in Cebu, Lanao del Norte, and Cavite
  • Peer mentorship for ALS educators and community tutors, often in areas with no formal teacher support systems

We saw how grassroots efforts – done consistently and with heart – can transform isolated educators into empowered communities.

Strengthening Partnerships with Faith and Education Networks
WBS continued to collaborate with:

  • Parish education ministries and mission schools
  • Teacher organizations advocating for humane workload and mental health
  • Indigenous learning centers needing both pedagogical and spiritual accompaniment

These partnerships allowed WBS to remain small but far-reaching, trusted in spaces where larger institutions struggle to gain entry.

Focus on Teacher Mental Health and Rest
This year’s special offering was a Teacher Retreat and Rest Program, piloted in five regions.  It involved:

  • 3-day recollection-retreats for exhausted educators
  • Sessions on spiritual rest, forgiveness, and rediscovering joy
  • Silent prayer spaces, journaling, and reflective circles

Feedback from participants showed how deeply teachers longed for safe, non-judgmental spaces to be honest about their fatigue and spiritual dryness.

Publications Released in 2024

  • Mga Guro, Mga Alaala: Remembering Why We Teach” – a devotional booklet of meditations written by teachers
  • Pagtuturo sa Gitna ng Kakulangan” – a field manual on creative teaching with limited resources
  • Updated WBS Formation Framework for schools and parishes interested in replicating our model.

A Quiet Thank You
To you – our friends, members, donors, and volunteers—you kept the work alive.  Because of you, the fire of mission burned in the hearts of teachers who teach against all odds.  We may never count all the fruits.  But we continue to sow.  Thank you for choosing to walk with us.
