WBS Institute for Asian Educators Development
Empowering Educators – Strengthening Communities – Advancing Education Justice
Message from the President
“In 2016, WBS remained steadfast in our mission to advocate for the rights and well-being of Filipino educators while fostering transformative education. Our programs this year reflect a deepening commitment to social relevance, regional inclusivity, and professional growth.”
National Convention 2016 – “Teachers as Agents of Social Change”
Held in Iloilo City, this year’s national convention was a resounding success, with 520 participants representing 12 regions. Key discussions focused on the role of teachers in nation-building, the urgency of curriculum reform, and the importance of scientific and nationalist education. Asian affiliates from Thailand and Indonesia also presented on community-driven education models.
Strengthening Support for Retired Teachers
Through our Paglingap sa Guro initiative, we extended financial support and home visits to 41 retired educators. WBS volunteers provided companionship, medication assistance, and transportation aid. Six teachers who passed away this year received proper burial support and memorial tributes from local WBS chapters.
Teacher-to-Teacher Mentorship Circles Launched
WBS launched mentorship circles in Quezon City, Bacolod, and Cagayan de Oro, where experienced educators coach new teachers in lesson planning, classroom management, and student-centered pedagogy. These circles are also safe spaces for emotional support and professional encouragement.
Workshops on Democratic Participation in Education
In partnership with community schools, WBS organized workshops that encouraged teacher and student participation in school governance. This initiative supported greater transparency, grassroots leadership, and respect for democratic principles in local education systems.
English for Empowerment Program
More than 200 teachers across Zamboanga and Tarlac benefited from the “English for Empowerment” seminars, which integrated communication techniques with values-based content. The program also included student activities to improve public speaking and confidence in using English as a second language.
Publications and Research
WBS released two publications this year:
- Mga Kuwento ng Guro, Kuwento ng Pag-asa – A compilation of real-life stories from public school teachers across the islands.
- Mula sa Guro, Para sa Bayan – A position paper outlining urgent reforms in the teacher education curriculum.
Solidarity in Times of Crisis
WBS mobilized relief efforts for teachers affected by Typhoon Lawin in Northern Luzon. Through donations and logistics support, we were able to provide hygiene kits, school supplies, and emergency cash assistance to 87 educators and their families.
A Salute to Our Volunteers and Donors
Your consistent generosity and active involvement are the foundation of everything we do. Thank you for believing in our educators and in our shared goal of quality, justice-oriented education.
Looking Ahead in 2017
We will focus on rural teacher development, expand our partnerships in Asia, and amplify the voices of grassroots educators. With compassion, unity, and resolve, we move forward together.
